US based Nepali designer Prabal Gurung is going to design the uniforms of Japanese airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA). Prabal is going to design the uniform in modern perspective while incorporating the history of the airline. Prabal’s design will be used by all 10,000 staffs including flight attendants and ground staffs.
ANA is the largest airline in Japan and Gurung has established himself as one of the most loved fashion icon in the world.
Who is Prabal Gurung?
Prabal Gurung is a Nepali designer based in New York City.
Prabal moved to New York from Nepal in 1999. He attended Parsons School of Design and worked as the design director at Bill Blass. He founded his own label after 10 years of arriving in the US. A year after starting his own label, he was named the runner-up of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize in 2010.
US first lady Michelle Obama also loves to be seen on Gurung’s design. His designs are also worn by Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Demi Moore, Kate Hudson, Seelena Gomez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson and others. Bollywood actresses like Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone have also worn the designs of Prabal.
Prabal was born in Singapore to Nepali parents. He went to St. Xavier’s School in Kathmandu. After completion of schooling in Nepal he went to India to study fashion design in National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. He also started his fashion designing career in Delhi.
After moving to US in 1999 and enrolling to Parsons School of Design, he was awarded the Best Designer title in the annual Parson/FIT design competition.
After completion of his studies he worked with Cynthia Rowley’s design team for two years. After that he became the design director at Bill Blass. After five years of being the design director at Bill Blass, he started his own collection PRABAL GURUNG in 2009.
In 2010 Prabal received the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and was nominated for the 2010 CFDA Swarovski Womenswear Award.
